Although singer/guitarist Odetta Gordon is most closely identified with the collegiate folk revival of the late '50s, she began her career singing blues in coffeehouses, and continued to play the blues regularly throughout her recording career. It's not surprising, since the blues is a vernacular form not at all far removed from the story-form ballads that are a huge part of the folk tradition, and so the dual focus on ballads and blues on this excellently sequenced 18-track compilation makes perfect sense.Opening with a rousing version of the gospel standard "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" and closing with Odetta's famous "Spiritual Trilogy," the religious underpinnings of much of Odetta's work are readily apparent throughout. Elsewhere, blues standards like "Lowlands" and "'Buked and Scorned" sit beside classic folk ballads like "Greensleeves" and "The Fox." BEST OF BALLADS AND BLUES is an excellent introduction to this underappreciated artist.

This is ostensibly a children's album, but if you weren't listening intently to the skew of the lyrics, you'd just think it was a straight-up contemporary singer-songwriter effort. This recording continues McCutcheon's seasonal series, and it does contain songs about Halloween, Thanksgiving and such, but it seems to venture far beyond the theme. AUTUMNSONGS is ultimately a family album rather than just a kids' recording.

Long before Don Williams became a Nashville superstar and fixture in the 70s, he was in this pretty darn cool band! Developing from the duo Strangers Two which Don had formed with Lofton Kline, the Pozo Seco Singers were completed with the addition of fellow folkie Susan Taylor, playing everything from Kingston Trio-type Folk to Country-ish tunes influenced by their Texan background.
