Dizzy Gillespie spent the early 1950s recording for labels such as Savoy, Norgran, Clef and Debut, before signing to Verve Records in 1956. His first release with Verve was 1956's Dizzy In Greece, recorded shortly after the conclusion of Gillespie's State Department-sponsored world tour. In December 1957, Diz recorded with pioneering saxophonists Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins. The interplay between the participants resulted in some of the greatest moments recorded by any of them; the resultant album, Duets, came out in 1958. Sonny Side Up from 1959 again featured the same three musicians performing together. Dizzy Gillespie's next release on Verve was Have Trumpet, Will Excite! (1959). One of the most influential figures in the development of jazz piano and, according to one major source; 'one of a small number of pianists whose playing shaped the history of jazz', Earl Hines was born on December 28th 1903. In 1925, Hines moved to Chicago. In the poolroom at Chicago's Musicians' Union Hines met Louis Armstrong. They became good friends and Armstrong joined Hines in Carroll Dickerson's band at the Sunset Cafe. In 1927, this became Louis Armstrong's band under the musical direction of Hines. Few captured the sleek, swinging sophistication of jazz better than pianist, composer, and bandleader John Lewis, who had a long, deep, personal relationship with Jazz at Lincoln Center. “He used to always call our program a miracle,” says Wynton Marsalis. “He used to always say, ‘Keep that miracle going.’” In 2013, when the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis set out to honor the legacy of the Modern Jazz Quartet’s maestro, they teamed up with New Orleans’ own Jon Batiste. The bandleader of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and a prodigious pianist in his own right, Batiste joined the JLCO to tackle some of Lewis’s most iconic tunes during a sold-out concert in Rose Theater, the House of Swing. From the blistering bebop of “Two Bass Hit” to the ... [Read More] Best Dizzy Gillespie Albums
Danny Grissett is definitely one of today's most exciting and respected pianists. The go-to keyboard man for the likes of Tom Harrell, Jeremy Pelt, Wayne Escoffey and others Grissett also finds time to lead his own groups and is a composer of considerable merit. A rare artist who grips and holds attention, Grissett handles the classics of the American songbook with an aplomb equal to the way he deals with the rather complex structures of his own intricate compositions. A gifted improviser with splendid technique, the pianist can also offer warmth and affection in melodic lines, the balance of fine taste, pungent swing and a jubilant approach inevitably generating audience cheer. For his first recording as a leader for Savant, Grissett and company offer a varied and interesting set-list whi... [Read More] Best Dizzy Gillespie Albums
