  • Just for Love

With the return of Gary Duncan and the recording debut of founder Dino Valenti, Just for Love, Quicksilver's fourth album, marked their debut as the band they were intended to be. The ironic thing about that is that, led by singer/songwriter Valenti, they were a much more pop-oriented band than their fans had come to expect. On Just for Love, Quicksilver finally was Valenti's backup group (he wrote all but one of the songs), and while this gave them greater coherence and accessibility, as well as their only Top 50 single in "Fresh Air," it also made them less the boogie band they had been. And it meant the band's days were numbered. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

  • Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco 1965

Repressing of this two CD live release from the Bay Area rockers. This recording finds the Quicksilver Messenger Service playing at the Carousel Ballroom in San Francisco. The Carousel was another of Bill Graham's venues and he would rename it the Fillmore West and run it until 1971. When this recording was made it was just a few weeks after the release of the self titled debut from Quicksilver Messenger Service. The second disc is the real pull for Quicksilver fans as it contains just the one track of the band doing what they do best and what sealed their reputation as a live band. The disc is taken up with the Jam a an extended piece which never outstays it's welcome but which underpins the band's musical inventiveness and dexterity. Voiceprint.

  • Be A Brother / How Hard Is It

Digitally remastered two-fer containing a pair of albums by the legendary rockers. Big Brother is remembered as the band that gave Janis Joplin her start. They were originally formed in San Francisco in 1965, and Janis joined in 1966. By the end of 1968 Janis had moved on, And Big Brother never really fully recovered. In 1970 they recorded Be A Brother produced by Nick Gravenites and followed it in 1971 with the aptly titled How Hard It Is a much superior album. The instrumental 'Maui' and the song 'Shine On' are as good as anything Moby Grape and Quicksilver Messenger Service could conjure up. This is a striking record by an important band, but sadly after Janis they were completely overlooked.
