Originally born in the lighthearted spirit of cover albums such as Metallica's GARAGE DAYS series, RENEGADES is an assembly of interpretations of protest songs that spans many musical styles.From the funk treatment of the obscure "Pistol Grip Pump" (originally recorded by Volume 10), to the slowed-down, stomping groove of the MC5's "Kick Out the Jams," there is seemingly no song the band can't transform and make their own. This album features the then-young bebop musicians J.J. Johnson (trombone), Idrees Sulieman (trumpet), Barry Galbraith (guitar), Oscar Pettiford (bass), and the great Hank Jones (piano).The rhythm section plays with a quieter, calmer approach to the music best evidenced by the opening track "Chant." However, early hard-bop is heard on tracks such as "Juicy Fruit" and "Blue Lights." Refusing to be pigeon-holed, Hawkins returns to his swing roots with "Sanctity." This is one of Hawk's best efforts from to come out of the 1950s.

The music world eventually caught up, trip-hop happened, and the combination proffered by 1996's landmark BEAT quickly became commonplace. LUSHLIFE, Bowery Electric's belated follow-up, strikes back with stronger songs and sharper production, bucking the trip-hop trend.LUSHLIFE's after-dark cityscape incorporates the best atmospheric elements of hip-hop, dub, downtempo, and soundtrack design. Profound basslines burrow beneath velvety string swatches ("Deep Blue," "Lushlife") and organ shimmers, guitars glittering everywhere like motes of stardust. Chandler's programming and production match the sparse, spooky eloquence of the RZA's Wu-Tang work, particularly on "Psalms of Survival," "Saved," and the album finale "Passages." Schwendener's vocals drift dreamily, surveying an unbroken neon skyline of samples, scratches, and breakbeats. The sweet pop snarl of "Freedom Fighter" makes for an ideal single, though the song seems slightly at odds with the album's finely tuned melancholic mood.
