The Destroyers have been called a glorified bar band, yet they deserve credit for introducing '80s mainstreamers to early rockers such as Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. Its easy enough to trace the lineage of every one of the ten cuts on George Thorogood & the Destroyers self-titled 1977 debut. Even the originals, of which there are only two, wear their influences on their sleeve, so theres not a minute of this album where the presence of Hound Dog Taylor, Elmore James, Bo Diddley, and John Lee Hooker loom large. Not one of those bluesmen ever played with much finesse, and Thorogood picked up that thread and ran with it, playing so hard the group seemed like a gang of primitives. The quot;first takequot; of the bands debut album featuring Thorogoods original trio - Thorogood on vocals, electric guitar, harmonica, Ron Smith on guitar and Jeff Simon on drums - the album features Thorogoods first incarnation of the then George Thorogood and The Delaware Destroyers, modeled on Hound Dog Taylors format-two guitars and drums. The actual studio album that was later released in 1977 included bass player Bill Blough, who joined the band several months after the first raw sessions took place.
