For awhile there, ol' Pete had a pretty nifty solo career going. Who Came First, his 1972 solo debut, sidestepped comparisons to the Who by tackling spiritual themes with low-key charm, qualities that resurfaced on Rough Mix, his wonderful 1977 duo record with Ronnie Lane. Then came Empty Glass, which was both grand and successful, like peak Who. From then on, Townshend's been mostly grandiose and unsuccessful. Coming after Keith Moons death the album sees Townshend at his most emotional and rawest as he publicly acknowledges his own addictions and exorcises his demons. Probably the most complex of the Townshend solo albums, 1993s Psychoderelict is a multi-layered concept album which also kick-started Townshends first solo tour. Harking back to his aborted Lifehouse project the album includes music written during that period and spans a gap between Lifehouse and The Whos 2006 comeback album Endless Wire. The album was premiered to an invited audience at the Crystal Room at The Mayfair Hotel in London where Townshend performed a selection of the music with actors providing the dialogue.
