  • Incredible Jazz Guitar [Box set]

Product Description On a technical level Wes brought a style famous for block chords and octaves played with the thumb, taking a different approach from masters Lang, Christian and Kessel, on a musical level he brought so much more to the landscape of Jazz guitar. These three albums represent his finest recordings over an eighteen month period for Riverside after his stints with Lionel Hampton and his orchestra and before he became a little less in favour with Jazz aficionados and a little more so with the easy listening crowd. • Chemistry

“Chemistry” is certainly an apt title for the latest Houston Person-Ron Carter duo album. Every tune is imbued with a rare sense of intimacy and almost telepathic sense of communication. Totally in their niche, the two men have selected a set list of favorite standards with which they are both amply familiar. But a good tune in the hands of artists such as Carter and Person is always a unique and special occasion. Person, in the glow of his artistic maturity, sounds completely relaxed with his burnished tone superbly caught by engineer Rudy Van Gelder. Ron Carter, carrying the responsibilities of time keeper, harmonist and unaccompanied soloist relishes his role and responds with an easy virtuosity that only a master musician can supply. This is music-making of the highest order.... [Read More]

  • Personnel: Yusef Lateef, Ron Carter, Hugh Lawson, Herman Wright, Lex Humphries. Recorded in May 1960.Yusef Lateef is one of jazz's most fascinating instrumentalists. His experiments with flute and particularly oboe and bassoon have made Lateef much more than just another fine tenor saxophonist. On this 1960 release (produced by Orrin Keepnews), we hear the many sides to Lateef's musical personality. Indeed, the title undoubtedly refers to Lateef's interest in sax, flute and oboe respectively. Given this, track one, "Goin' Home" is a medium-tempo swing that highlights Lateef's refined, smoky tenor sound. However, on the next track, Lateef switches to oboe, navigating his way through Duke Ellington's bluesy chart, "I'm Just a Lucky So and So." Other tunes such as "Lateef's Minor 7th" and "Adoration" feature Lateef's soaring flute chops. In general, the music on THE THREE FACES OF YUSEF LATEEF showcases the reed man's straight-ahead jazz skill as well his penchant for experimental composition. The latter is best epitomized by the semi-classical piece, "From Within" written by Lateef himself and featuring pianist Hugh Lawson on celeste, drummer Lex Humphries on timpani, and bassist Ron Carter on cello.
