It's not surprising, since the blues is a vernacular form not at all far removed from the story-form ballads that are a huge part of the folk tradition, and so the dual focus on ballads and blues on this excellently sequenced 18-track compilation makes perfect sense.Opening with a rousing version of the gospel standard "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" and closing with Odetta's famous "Spiritual Trilogy," the religious underpinnings of much of Odetta's work are readily apparent throughout. Elsewhere, blues standards like "Lowlands" and "'Buked and Scorned" sit beside classic folk ballads like "Greensleeves" and "The Fox." BEST OF BALLADS AND BLUES is an excellent introduction to this underappreciated artist.
