This CD presents Fauré's Requiem in the fully orchestrated version of 1901, though it's played on period instruments, so it seems much leaner than other recorded versions, such as Chung's on DG. This beautiful work has been accused of being too sentimental, and indeed, it is just that syrupiness that can make it appealing. But Herreweghe keeps the tempi on the quick side, while emphasizing some of the score's darker moments--the "Dies irae" in the "Libera me" is wonderfully grim--and it's very effective. The use of a harmonium instead of an organ (approved by Fauré) adds even more flavor to the already emphasized winds, and the singing, from soloists and chorus, is ideal. The Franck D Minor Symphony, a sort of grand bonus, is handsomely played, also on period instruments, which allow thi... [Read More] Faure Requiem Best Recording

Under the direction of Stephen Cleobury, The Choir of King's College, Cambridge and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment present the first recording of Marc Rigaudiere's reconstruction of the first complete liturgical performance of Faure's Requiem. Their performance faithfully recreates the 1889 premiere, even using the same organ stops as those available at the Cathedrale de Ste. Madeleine in Paris. Baritone Gerald Finley and treble Tom Pickard are the vocal soloists. Also included are the Cantique de Jean Racine, heard here in its original version for choir and organ, and the Messe Basse for high voices, sung by the sixteen choristers of the choir. Fluent and luminously textured accounts of Faurés major choral and orchestral music, compiled on CD for the first time. After the death of Sir Neville Marriner in October 2016 at the age of 91, Eloquence pays tribute to the conductors work on record with a Requiem - and the most gently consoling Requiem of them all - by Fauré. For this Philips recording in 1993, Marriner and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields were joined by a distinguished pair of soloists, baritone Thomas Allen and the soprano Sylvia McNair, who were critically praised at the time for their Faure Requiem Best Recording Faure: Requiem / Orchestral Works (CD)
Requiem (Opus 48) - Gabriel Fauré (soloists: Sarah Zimmerman, soprano; Bill Strom, baritone) As organist and choirmaster at the Church of the Madeleine in Paris, Gabriel Fauré provided music for countless funeral masses for his parishioners. In January 1888, he chose to perform a five-movement Requiem he had composed himself for the funeral of M. Lesoufaché, a well-known architect. The clergy chastised Fauré for his musical novelty and unorthodox selection of texts from the traditional Requiem Mass, especially his unique decision to set the Pie Jesu prayer from the end of the Dies Irae as a separate, solo movement.
