"mOBSCENE," reeks of ANGEL DUST-era Faith No More. "Para Noir" offers a romantic agenda in grand Manson style, with little chance for radio edit status. "Better Of Two Evils" and "Your Fist And Not Your Mouth" rally with undeniable choruses while "This Is The New Shit" nails a Korn-inflected groove. The set's down-tempo title track is built around a haunting piano line, and "(s)AINT" deftly captures the Powerman 5000 style. The album track most likely to get extensive re-mixing is the incredibly catchy "Ka-boom Ka-boom." THE GOLDEN AGE OF GROTESQUE drops yet another bomb on convention, and Marilyn Manson clearly planned it that way.

Sound familiar? Fat Joe once counted Big Pun as a stablemate, and J.O.S.E. starts out with a heartfelt tribute to the late star. It's strictly business from then on, however, with "King of N.Y." making claims for Joe's supremacy over the Tri-State area, with vocal encouragement from dancehall toaster Buju Banton and "Definition of a Don" (featuring the immortal line "If I can't afford it I'll extort it") consolidating his claims of domination. Elsewhere R. Kelly makes an appearance on the R&B-flavored "We Thuggin'" which documents a night out on the town, while the mightily bankable Ludacris is featured on "Get the Hell on With That," proving that, if nothing else, Fat Joe can pick his partners with impunity.

It's easy to bemoan the Grammy Awards, particularly when it comes to the committee's understanding of rap. The first winner of the Best Rap Record was "Parents Just Don't Understand" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, so what do they know. Well, more than one might think, as evidenced by the track listing of nominees on this surprisingly beguiling collection. Everyone from Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott to Dr. Dre to, yes, Grammy fave Will Smith is represented on this compilation. They might even have selected the best hip-hop song of 1999 in The Roots' "The Next Movement." The Philly Crew appears again for their luscious collaboration with Erykah Badu "You Got Me." Eminem's "My Name Is" for all its unabashed white-boy rap leanings, was hard to hate, let alone ignore. Then there's Nas' "I Am" to account for the harder-edged contingent. Okay, some important artists of 1999 are overlooked; there's nothing by Mos Def, Pharoah Monche, or any of the various Wu-Tangers who released top-notch albums during 1999. However, for those who might doubt the Grammys, this compilation is eye-opening. Then again, looking back, "Parents Just Don't Understand" was pretty fun at the time.

PERSEVERANCIA was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Salsa/Merengue Album.Puerto Rican salsa star Tito Rojas continues his winning streak of solo albums with PERSEVERANCIA. A lively outing carried by the charming vocals of Rojas, this set is highly rhythmic and immediately infectious. Songs such as "Me Enamoro Mas de Ti" and "Me Tiene Enamorao" shuffle giddily along, lifted by excellent horn arrangements, while "Como a Ti Te Gusta" features a slightly melancholy undercurrent. Overall, the proceedings are undeniably upbeat, and any listener will have a hard time resisting the urge to get up and dance to Rojas and his accomplished band of musicians.
