  • Best of the J. Geils Band

The J. Geils Band were one of the most popular rock & roll bands in America during the '70s. They had no trouble packing out arenas as they churned out their unusual mix of greasy covers of obscure R&B, doo wop, and soul tunes. The band had a distinctive style, catchy R&B-based rock tunes like "Give It To Me" and "Musta Of Got Lost". The early 80's saw the release of the bands biggest hit that entered the UK chart at number 3 "Centerfold". Soon after the release of "Centerfold" the band spilt up and went their separate ways. Capitol. 2006.

  • Includes liner notes by Don Kennedy.Digitally remastered by Gary Rice.Trying to capture Louis Armstrong's best on a single CD is a hopeless task. Even a brief perusal of the many "best of" collections on the market shows that Armstrong had too many sides to pin down with a few tracks. There is Armstrong, the cornet virtuoso, playing with the Hot Fives and Hot Sevens; there's Armstrong, the gruff-voiced singer, who could turn a throwaway lyric into poetry; there is Armstrong, the pop star, fronting a big band; and there is Armstrong, the "Ambassador of Goodwill," performing with his touring All-Stars.Despite a cover photo from much later, Intersound's BEST OF wisely sticks to a single period of Armstrong's career-namely his early days fronting small groups. The booklet provides little information about the particular recordings, but they are primarily taken from the Hot Fives and Sevens of the late 1920s. These are the performances that made Armstrong a star-"Mahogany Hall Stomp," "Cornet Chop Suey," and "Heebie Jeebies," his first foray into scat. Digital remastering has rendered these songs in a slightly different light, punching up the sound while adding a "modern" touch of reverb. In any event, these recordings are required listening for every red-blooded American.

  • The Charlatans U.K.: Tim Burgess (vocals); Mark Collins (guitar); Rob Collins (Clavinet, Hammond B-3 organ, Wurlitzer, piano, background vocals); Martin Blunt (bass); Jon Brookes (drums).Additional personnel: Dave Charles (percussion); Steve Hillage (programming).Producers: The Charlatans U.K., Dave Charles, Steve Hillage. The Charlatans' star rose quickly and then stalled; they never really fit comfortably into the same mold that gave us the Happy Mondays, The Stone Roses, or The Smiths. Dogged by misfortune, self inflicted and otherwise, they ultimately just didn't possess the cachet of a late '80s 'Manchester band.' However, their eponymously titled fourth album brought them to a hitherto unachieved level of prominence--almost, but not quite, turning them into international stars. The Charlatans are at their most Stones-like here, evoking Primal Scream and other rockier British dance-influenced acts. Highlights include the great "Just When You're Thinkin' Things Over," "Just Lookin'," and "Toothache." Full of great hooks and lyrically persuasive, this album is recommended to anyone with an interest in the best of '90s British pop.

England s Charlatans U.K. have grown considerKly since they surfaced in 1990 as part of the Manchester dance scene. The band members have become solid songwriters and soulful, bluesy musicians who hint at what the Rolling Stones might sound like today if they hadn t become such pathetic geezers. Unfortunately, the band s self-titled album hasn t generated much excitement at home, and the group hasn t made an impact in the U.S. since its debut single, The Only One I Know. It s a strong effort nonetheless, and a lot more satisfying than contemporaneous outings by kindred spirits the

  • Personnel: Ruben Blades; Angel "Papo" Vasquez, Reinaldo Jorge, Leopoldo Pineda (trombone); Oscar Hernandez (piano); Arturo Ortiz (synthesizer); Mike Vinas (bass); Robert Armeen (drums); Roger Paiz (bongos); Edwin "Eddy" Montalvo, Marc Quinones (congas); Ralph Irizarry (timbales).Recorded live at The Lonestar Roadhouse, New York, New York on October 29 & 30, 1989.One year after the release of ANTECEDENTES, Ruben Blades and his Son Del Solar played to a packed, smoky Lone Star Roadhouse in Greenwich Village, New York, and LIVE! is the electrifying result. With its characteristic emphasis on keyboards and percussion rather than horns, Son Del Solar is at its best, making Blades' lyrical masterpieces groove hard with a tropi-pop luster. At the congas sits session man Marc Quinones who, only a few years later, would introduce Latin percussion into that Southern blues rock totem, the Allman Brothers Band. The spirited rendition of "Decisiones" became a subsequent salsa club favorite, with the keen wit of its verses and fiercely catchy chorus. "El Padre Antonio" and "Buscando America" are each given long, hearty treatments, with Ruben calling out his stirring verses of Pan-American unity in epic fashion. An up-tempo "La Cancion Del Final Del Mundo" addresses the threat of nuclear war with deceptively good cheer, while 1978's "Pedro Navaja" slowly builds into a trombone-fueled anthem. Ruben's pithy banter with the audience makes the set a special treat for Spanish speakers.

  • Personnel: Marilyn Manson (vocals, guitar, saxophone, Mellotron, synthesizer, bass, drums, loops); John (guitar, strings, piano); Tim Skold (guitar, accordion, keyboards, synthesizer, bass, programming); MW Gacy (keyboards, synthesizer, loops); Ginger Fish (drums).Producers: Marilyn Manson, Tim Skold, Ben Grosse.Recorded at Doppelherz, The Mix Room, Burbank, California and Ocean Way Studios, Los Angeles, California."Mobscene" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.Marilyn Manson proudly wears his musical influences on his band's fifth studio album, where the perpetually androgynous singer and company continue their crusade of industrial rock outrage, making nods to forerunners while never losing that which is quintessentially Manson. "mOBSCENE," reeks of ANGEL DUST-era Faith No More. "Para Noir" offers a romantic agenda in grand Manson style, with little chance for radio edit status. "Better Of Two Evils" and "Your Fist And Not Your Mouth" rally with undeniable choruses while "This Is The New Shit" nails a Korn-inflected groove. The set's down-tempo title track is built around a haunting piano line, and "(s)AINT" deftly captures the Powerman 5000 style. The album track most likely to get extensive re-mixing is the incredibly catchy "Ka-boom Ka-boom." THE GOLDEN AGE OF GROTESQUE drops yet another bomb on convention, and Marilyn Manson clearly planned it that way.
