  • Monsters of Rock Live at Donington 1980

On Saturday, August 16th, 1980 Rainbow took to the stage to headline the first rock festival to be staged at Castle Donington. It was the culmination of the band s tour in support of the hugely successful Down To Earth album, released in 1979, and would prove to be the last live show featuring this particular line-up of the band: Ritchie Blackmore (guitars), Don Airey (keyboards), Graham Bonnet (vocals), Roger Glover (bass) and Cozy Powell (drums). The set featured tracks from the new album alongside classics from earlier in their career. There are virtuoso solo spots for Blackmore, Airey and Powell which serve to highlight the sheer musical ...

  • Personnel: Bud Powell (piano); George Duvivier, Charles Mingus (bass); Max Roach, Art Taylor (drums).Recorded live at Massey Hall, Toronto, Canada and in New York, New York in 1953. Originally released as a 10 inch LP on Debut (3).Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). The centerpiece of JAZZ AT MASSEY HALL is a Bud Powell trio performance recorded in Toronto's Massey Hall in 1953. This concert marked a return for Powell to the concert scene after a one-year absence due to illness. While there are many compelling performances on the release--not only by Bud, but also by his bandmates, bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Max Roach--as a whole, this release is an intriguing hybrid. Also included here are excerpts from a nightclub performance during the summer of that year, with Powell joined by George Duvivier (bass) and Art Taylor (drums). Accordingly, the sonic quality of the nightclub cuts carries a loose, off-the-cuff feel, while the Massey Hall concert is appropriately fuller sounding. Mingus is well represented here--his composition "Bass-ically Speaking" is included in this reissue, and it is a fine example of Mingus's work. Powell is at his best on "Embraceable You" and "Sure Thing," two Massey Hall cuts that display an expressive undertone and an uncanny connection with the audience.

  • Rancid: Lars Frederiksen, Tim Armstrong (vocals, guitar); Matt Freeman (bass, background vocals); Brett Reed (drums).Additional personnel: Paul Jackson (Hammond organ); Bashiri Johnson (percussion); DJ Disk (scratches). There's a saying that there can never be too much of a good thing, and Rancid could've coined the phrase. Their irresistible old-school punk and their ska-in-the-garage guitar sound are sure to please anyone who thought the Clash were the best that '70s punk had to offer.Yet, considering their loyalty to the original punk aesthetic, Rancid sound surprisingly fresh. ...AND OUT COME THE WOLVES proves the band knows their fans and can still live by their causes. They're self-proclaimed "Roots Radicals," but this is a '90s band. "Lock, Stop, And Gone" is crammed with details of modern L.A., where there's "a fire on the corner and it's never gonna stop" and where "the killer in the neighborhood never got caught." There's also bewilderment at the fact that the punk that was sure to keep them on the fringes is a high-profile career now--"too much attention unavoidably destroyed us," they claim on "Journey To The End Of East Bay."Throughout ...AND OUT COME THE WOLVES, Rancid keep their edge. They won't succumb to rehashing punk, instead giving it new life through their uncompromising songs. With so many '90s new-jack punks on the scene, Rancid are the real thing--not a band jumping on a bandwagon, or one that waited around for a style to be hip again, but true originals.
